Southwest University Park Put Baseball Back in Downtown El Paso (El Paso Sun City News)

Southwest University Park, the downtown ballpark that opened in 2014, is the home of the El Paso Chihuahuas, the city's Triple-A baseball team. The park sits on the site of the former City Hall, a few blocks from San Jacinto Plaza, and its design reaches deliberately into local history — its architecture echoes the nearby Union Depot and other historic downtown buildings.

Triple-A baseball is the highest level of the minor leagues, one step below the majors, and the Chihuahuas' schedule brings a long season of home games to downtown from spring into fall. The ballpark's capacity, around nine and a half thousand, is sized for the intimate feel minor-league parks are known for: lawn seating, close sight lines, and promotions pitched at families as much as at committed baseball fans.

The ballpark changed downtown El Paso's center of gravity when it opened. Game nights fill nearby restaurants and bars, the streets around the park take on a fair-weather festival feel, and the venue also hosts concerts, community events, and gatherings outside the baseball calendar. It is routinely cited as the anchor of downtown's entertainment revival.

The Chihuahuas' identity leans into the desert. The team's name references the Chihuahuan Desert that surrounds the city, and its branding — playful, a little defiant — has been embraced by fans who pack the park on weekend dates and for the team's popular theme nights.

Schedules, tickets, and event information are published by the team. For El Paso residents, the essential facts are simpler: on a warm night during the season, the center of the city is a ballgame a short walk from the plaza, in a park built to look like it has always been there.
